Loches

The town of Loches sprung up around a 6th century monastery that was founded here by St. Ours. Towering above the town, Loches’ citadel is still surrounded by its 12th century ramparts, protecting a medieval old-town filled with historic monuments, such as the Royal Lodgings’ of Charles VII, where Joan of Arc came to persuade Charles to go to Reims to be crowned King of France. In the palace visitors will find the tomb of Agnes Sorrel, who was renowned for setting a trend of semi-nudity in the Court of Charles VII. Dominating the citadel is the 10th century donjon, one of the oldest in France. In the lower town are excellent example of Renaissance architecture, such as the 16th century Tour Saint-Antoine. The nearby Town Hall and Hotel Nau, with its 3 storeys of Italian loggias, are also highlights.
