Machairas Monastery

Rich history, religious significance and miraculous icons make this monastery one of the most significant in all of Cyprus.

About

Situated on the slopes of Mount Kionia, Machairas Monastery is one of the five Stavropegic Monasteries of the Church of Cyprus, so it's under the direct authority of the Patriarch or another high-ranking bishop, rather than a local bishop. Legend has it that an unknown hermit smuggled an icon of the Virgin Mary, painted by Luke the Apostle, from Asia Minor to Cyprus during the 8th or 9th century. The icon remained concealed in a cave until two other hermits from Palestine macheted their way through thick plant growth to reach it, after which it was given the name ‘Machairotissa’ in reference to the Greek word for knife. The whole monastery, established on this site in the 12th century, derives its name from this icon. Within the Byzantine style monastery, you'll find the main church adorned with religious icons, chandeliers, stone floors and wall frescoes, with the icon of the Virgin Mary occupying a prominent position, drawing pilgrims for its miraculous healing powers. Currently, around 20-30 Orthodox monks reside in the monastery, followings strict vows similar to those in Mount Athos, Greece, and sustain themselves through agricultural activities and donations. Admission to the monastery is free, and it is open daily from 8:30 to 17:30, although the working hours may be subject to change without prior notice. To be on the safe side, it is recommended to verify the opening hours by calling +357 22 359 334.
