Ecuador
Surrounded by banana plantations, this seaside city is known as the “Banana Capital of the World”.
Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Machala’s seaside position and fertile surroundings allowed it to grow into one of the country’s chief agricultural and shipping centers. Bananas, in particular play a major role in the city’s economy where they’re known locally as “green gold”. During the third week of September, the city celebrates all things banana during the World Banana Fair, and the fruit features prominently in its public art, like the Monumento al Bananero (the Banana Picker). While Machala is seen more as a transit hub than a real destination, its coast is lined with sandy beaches where visitors can relax and soak up the sun and a boat or canoe trip to the Isla del Amor, is a little-known treat for nature lovers, thanks to its amazing abundance of birdlife.
