Its ancient cave art and massive stalagmites put Magura cave on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites.
With its network of tunnels stretching for 2.5 kilometres, the 15-million-year-old Magura Cave is one of the most important paleontological sites in Europe. Its unique collection of cave art from the Post-Paleolithic era depicts religious, hunting and mating scenes that shed light on lives of the cave’s ancient inhabitants. Although access to the paintings is restricted, visitors can still enjoy the cave’s impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and pearls. Magura cave’s conditions also allow for production of natural sparkling wines. The local winery hosts wine tastings in the Bat Gallery of the cave.
