Melrose Abbey

Scotland’s chief Cistercian house, the remains of this medieval abbey still flaunt exquisite architecture and unusual sculptures - and the heart of Robert the Bruce.

About

Founded by King David I of Scotland in 1136, Melrose Abbey’s roots date back to a 7th century monastery where St. Cuthbert was trained. Over the centuries, the Melrose grew to become Scotland’s premier abbey, but its position on a main road made it subject to frequent English attacks. After being severely damaged on two occasions in the 14th century, the abbey never fully recovered, and was reduced to a parish church by the time it was assaulted by Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War. Today, visitors can admire the elegant architecture, which is primarily from the 15th century, and filled with unusual sculptures including hobgoblins, ladle-bearing cooks, and a bagpipe playing pig. In the Commendator's House, visitors can examine artefacts unearthed during excavations, and a commemorative stone plaque in the grounds marks burial place Robert the Bruce's heart.
