Mineral de Pozos

Twice abandoned, this former mining-turned-ghost town is a Pueblo Mágico that offers a haunting look at its rich past.

About

In a region with so many mines, mostly extracting silver, it’s no surprise that a city of 50,000 once stood here. But the lower levels of the mines flooded and the city was abandoned to the elements. By 1950 only 200 people remained. More recently the relatives of former miners have been returning to breathe new life into Mineral de Pozos. The 3,500 residents are repairing old houses and installing art around the town. But away from the central areas Mineral de Pozos remains a ghost town with many abandoned ruins to explore. The best sites are a little away from the town proper. The smaller mine works to the east, Santa Brígida, contains the old silver smelting kilns and a remarkably intact villa. West is the larger complex, El Triángulo, a ruined village in itself and is best appreciated with a guide from the centre of town.
