모리츠부르크

Situated on its own private island, Moritzburg Castle appears to rise out of the water like something from a fairytale.

About

With its four rounded towers and pointed turrets, Moritzburg Castle (‘Schloss Moritzburg’) is a picture perfect example of Baroque architecture. While it has been home to a succession of European aristocrats and gentry, Moritzburg’s most famous resident was undoubtedly Alexander the Strong, Elector of Saxony and future King of Poland. Moritzburg was used by Alexander as a hunting lodge and recreational retreat and, as you wonder around the opulent countryside that surrounds the castle, you can understand why he was so fond of it. Despite being a mere 8 miles outside of Dresen city limits, everything feels serene and tranquil. Inside the castle rooms have been restored and decorated in styles popular in the 18th Century, so visitors can really imagine what it would have been like to be a guest at Alexander’s court. Guided tours are offered twice a day, or visitors can explore on their own using an audio guide.
