National Archeological Park of Tierradentro

The beautifully decorated rock-hewn tombs at this UNESCO World Heritage Site are the only ones of their kind in the Americas.

About

The National Archeological Park of Tierradentro is Colombia’s second-most-important archaeological site, preserving both monumental carvings and unusual funeral temples. Built between the 6th and 10th centuries, the subterranean tombs are decorated with motifs that reproduce the internal decor of their homes, offering fascinating insights into the lifestyle of a complex pre-Columbian society. Archaeologists have uncovered around 100 of the tombs to date, and the major ones are accessible via a gorgeous mountain hiking trail. Before setting out, it’s worth visiting the two museums at the entrance to see artefacts uncovered from the site and learn more about the indigenous culture that made them. The default stop time is enough for a short introductory experience. If you’d like to see more of the tombs, we’d recommend extending your visit.
