Nkokonjeru Tombs

With the tombs of the Ankole Kingdom’s last rulers and the long-horned cows typical to the area, this site offers a glimpse of the rich Ankole culture.

About

Nkokonjeru Tombs hold the remains of the last two Ankole kings, Edward Solomon Kahaya II and Charles Godfrey Rutahaba Gasyonga II, representing a historic royal reign and important cultural heritage for the Ankole people. The royal tombs are accompanied by a number of other eternally resting royals as well as a handful of grazing cattle. The Ankole Kingdom was not formally reinstituted, meaning the waiting prince was never coronated as king. Some say this upset him so much that he sold the land before his death. Today, the only Ankole inhabitants of the plot are the ancient breed of the long-horned cow. While the area is no longer fit for a king, the land is still hugely important to locals and some continue to perform cultural rites from time to time.
