Oberhofen Castle

With its lake tower and splendid park, this medieval castle manages to rival its magnificent setting.

About

Dating back to the 13th century, this noble residence on the shores of Lake Thun has retained its medieval keep, with it serving as the heart of the 15th century main palace and chapel. Further renovations in 1844 transformed the castle into a neo-Gothic summer palace, with a tower reaching out into the lake. Today, the palace houses a living museum, with including neo-Gothic dining rooms and a Turkish smoking parlor: The various exhibits display Bernese culture from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The castle chapel, adorned with 15th century paintings, is still be used today for baptisms and marriages. Outside, the large park was created in 1840, and considered one of the best in the alps, illustrating the the comings-and-goings of garden art.
