Türkiye
This ancient subterranean settlement is unlike any other in Turkey because of its prehistoric communication and defence systems.
The Ozkonak Underground City is so old that there’s no record of when it was created, though it’s generally accepted that it predates antiquity. Delving 10 stories underground (4 floors are open to the public), the city could house 60,000 people for up to three months during. While it’s amazing to think that a complex of this scale was carved out by hand thousands of years ago, it’s the surprisingly advanced industrial systems that really steal the show. Each entrance can be sealed with rolling stone doors, and there’s sophisticated ventilation and water systems through the complex. However, what sets the Ozkonak Underground City apart from any other underground city in the area is the rudimentary communication system that allowed each level to talk to the one above or below it, and a system of holes just above the entrances to pour hot oil on attacking forces.
