Peguche Waterfalls

It might be easy to reach, but this breathtaking deluge is steeped in ritual and legend.

About

A popular attraction in the Otavalo area, this 18 metre waterfall lies at the end of a well-maintained and easy walking track. Situated in the foothills of the Imbabura volcano, and just north of San Pablo Lake, it is also an indigenous ceremonial site - purification baths take place here a couple of days prior to the June Sun and harvest festival of Inti Raymi. There is a legend that surrounds the waterfall involving a sand-filled plate held by the devil and guarded by two black dogs, behind the cascade itself. When the water washes the sand off the plate the devil will take the soul of the next person to enter the waterfall. Thankfully you’re more likely to spot wild chinchilla and guinea pigs on the trail than the devil himself, and all the more pleasant for it!
