Appreciate the compelling contrast of this reservoir’s bright blue waters against the stark mountain backdrop.
Completed in 2003, Potrerillos Dam provides flood control, hydroelectricity and irrigation water to the surrounding area. Spanning 395 meters (1,296 ft) and standing 116 meters (381 ft) high, the concrete dam isn’t the main attraction here. Rather, it’s the vibrant blue waters of the Potrerillos Reservoir, surrounded by the rocky foothills of the Andes. This contrast provides a great photo op, and beautiful backdrop if you’d like to go rafting, horseback riding, or hiking. If you’re especially adventurous, you can even arrange to go paragliding at the nearby village of Villa Potrerillos (adjust your stop time accordingly).
