Risan Mosaic

Nestled in the UNESCO-protected Boka Kotorska Bay, the mosaics of this Roman villa depict a wide array of artistic styles.

About

The scenic coastal town of Risan has been settled since Illyrians, making it the oldest in the Bay of Kotor. Under Roman rule, the city flourished thanks to its busy port and position on a military road. Among the city’s 10,000 inhabitants, the wealthy had lavish villas built. While many of these were lost over the course of history, in 1930, the foundations of one were discovered, and listed as a cultural monument. Though not much remains of the villa’s superstructure, the rich mosaics are rich alone are more than able to speak to the owners statues. Walking the villas grounds, visitors can admire floors decorated in intricate geometric patterns, a dining-room embellished with flowers, herbs, grapevines and squid, and most importantly, the bedroom with its rare depiction of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep, reclining on a pillow.
