Roman Catholic Temple in Ofoldeak

Ounce surrounded by walls and a moat, this rural church was well-protected from from would-be intruders.

About

While the first mentions of a church in the area date back to 1332, the main part of the existing structure was built during the second half of the 15th century. Originally a Gothic vault, it was reconstructed at the beginning of the 16th century after being destroyed. The protective wall surrounding the church, of which the base portion still stands today, dates back to the end of the 15th century. The original height of the church’s rectangular bell tower reached 23 metres, and the church was enlarged length-wise and restored by the landowner in 1874. Further restoration and preservation efforts took place in the 1990s, which saw the replacement of glass windows with designed by Andras Szillagyi. This beautifully restored medieval church stands today as a testament to the world in which it once lived.
