Learn about the heartbreaking history of Rwandas largest waterfall.
Situated on the border between Rwanda and Tanzania, Rusumo Falls is the largest waterfall in Rwanda. Despite being "only" 15 m (49 ft) high, the 40 m (130 ft) wide deluge still puts on a powerful show. Mire significant than its stature is its role in Rwandan history. As the only bridging point in the area, both the Germans and Belgians used it to invade the country, and it became infamous during the 1994 Rwandan genocide when thousands of bodies flowed over the falls while refugees fled into Tanzania via the Rusumo Bridge above. Today, the falls have a memorial on the Rwandan side to honor the victims of the genocide. And, Rusumo Falls now has an important function as it is home to the Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Power Station, which generates electricity and provides power to Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi. For the best experience, it's recommended to visit the Falls during the wet season. Photo by Amakuru (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Amakuru) under CC BY-SA 3.0
