Backed by UNESCO, this group of women have taken control of their lives, producing unique textile products dyed by hand using indigo they grew themselves.
Safi Crafts was founded in 1999 by a group of 14 who began an embroidery and soil-dyeing project with the help of Canadian/American artist Jean Bradbury. The women created textiles and handicrafts using locally-sourced materials and natural dyes, taking inspiration from their heritage and everyday lives. In 2013, with the support of UNESCO and the Drosos Foundation, Safi Crafts began farming their own indigo to become even more self-reliant. Along with creating beautiful, handmade pieces, Safi Crafts has taught the women essential skills ranging from accounting to English language. The products offered here are not only unique and sustainable, but help support the local community.
