Find ancient ruins and fine pottery in this tradition-filled village.
Santa Maria Atzompa can trace its heritage back to around the 7th century, when it was founded as a satellite city to the nearby Zapotec capital of Monte Alban. Even 1500 years ago, Atzompa was renowned for its ceramics - a tradition that has persevered through today. In fact around 90% of the population are involved in making pottery. Take a stroll through the Mercado de Artesanías to view their handiwork, with items ranging from pots and cups to lampshades and animal figures – those with the dark green glaze are Atzompa’s signature "barro verde". Or, if you're more of a history lover, head to the Atzompa Archaeological Site. Formal excavations only began in 2009, and in that time, archaeologists have uncovered three ball courts, two sumptuous residences, several temples and a large kiln that you can enjoy without the crowds of Monte Alban. Plus, the Museo Comunitario de Atzompa 2km down the road exhibits some excellent pottery pieces found at the site, including detailed effigies and huge storage pots.
