This unique rest stop is more than just a convenient place to take a break after a long day of traveling.
Just off the main stretch of road, Sikh Temple Makindu serves as a rest stop for weary travelers making the long drive between the inland capital and seaside Mombasa. It is said that Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims would gather to reflect and pray at this location long before the temple was built in 1926. The tradition of welcoming people of all denominations continues today - the peaceful retreat has expanded since its humble beginnings in order to accommodate a growing number of travelers. There are around 200 beds on grounds available to any guest needing a place to sleep for a night or two. The tradition of langar, a type of community kitchen, is practiced 24 hours a day and a free meal is served to all visitors no matter their region, caste, gender, economic status or ethnicity. The goal of langar is to promote equality and connection with others no matter where they’re from and no matter their ability to pay. Visitors do not have to pay for their meal but most leave donations continuing the spirit of generosity.
