Thirlestane Castle

One of Scotland’s seven Great Houses, this historic manor is filled with the many treasures collected by the Maitland family.

About

Founded as a fort in the 13th century, Thirlestane Castle as it stands today was built by the Maitland family starting in 1590, when John Maitland, Chancellor to James VI of Scotland, erected a large keep. His grandson, named Secretary of State for Scotland in 1660, commissioned renowned architect Sir William Bruce to create a manor where he could conduct affairs of state. The quiet of the 19th century allowed the Maitlands to add two more large extensions to the castle to use it as a country mansion. Today, the Maitlands welcome visitors into their family home to share in its rich history and many treasures. In the Entrance Hall, you’ll find weapons dating back to the 18th century, while the stately dining room houses one of Scotland’s largest family portrait collections. Throughout the house, you’ll also find exquisite 17th century plasterwork, and fine furnishings. For more information, please visit http://thirlestanecastle.co.uk/ Photos: Phil Wilkinson
