The village represents a typical Goral community of 1,300 residents and for travelers seeking a genuine real life example of Slovak life at the turn of the twentieth-century then there is no better place to start. The village is also used as the starting point for several hiking trails although the secret of Zdiar’s charm lies in the past. Whether bathed in summer sun or covered in snow, Zdiar remains picturesque all year round and visitors can observe the traditional wooden homes that adorn the village. To discover more about the traditions and history of the village then stop by the folk museum and see at first-hand the colorful traditional folk costumes that until recently, residents of the village would wear on feast days. For the braver traveler, viewing of a traditional “wedding” in full costume can be arranged — the twist being that you are expected to take part in the ceremony!
