About Zurich

The city of Zurich is unique. It's the largest and most populous city in Switzerland, home to over 400,000 inhabitants, yet it's not the political capital. That title belongs to the charming town of Bern in eastern Switzerland, which is surprising to many travelers coming from Interlaken to Zurich.

Zurich's location is a primary reason why it holds so much historical significance and attracts millions of visitors today. You'll find it in the north of the nation, on the shores of Lake Zurich, and less than 19 miles from the German border. The region uses Central European Standard Time (GMT+1) as it's wedged between Western and Central Europe.

Although Zurich is now a 21st-century city filled with modern amenities, it's soaked in history. The area dates back to 58 BC when the Romans created the Turicum Customs Station for people crossing the continent. Goods such as food, wines, and materials all passed through here.

Throughout its 2000-year history, the city continued to thrive. Numerous ancient relics dotted along the cityscape give evidence of its rich past. Some of the most unmissable landmarks still standing today include the Old Town (Altstadt), Grossmünster Cathedral, Fraumünster Church, and Lindenhof Hill.

The region's ruler changed hands several times. The Romans, Frankish Kings, the Helvetic Confederation, the Holy Roman Empire, and the German Army all left their mark on the area's ways of life, creating a melting pot of history. As of 2024, German, French, Italian, and Romansh are all official languages of Switzerland, and although not an official language, 60% of citizens can communicate in English.

Like its rich past, it continues to flourish today. People know the area as one of the most financially influential cities worldwide. UBS, Nestle, Adecco Group, and countless banking firms reside here. But as a tourist, you'll be most glad to know that the FIFA Museum and Lindt Factory Museum are in the city!

From Interlaken to Zurich: Travel Tips

Driving from Interlaken to Zurich is one of the most incredible experiences in Europe. The distance of 57 miles of picture-perfect mother nature separates the two towns. But our expert local drivers want to share four travel tips to put the cherry on top of your Swiss cake!

Book in Advance

Organizing a trip from Interlaken to Zurich isn't as easy as jumping on a city tram. If you're planning to take public transportation, many troubles can turn your adventure into an unforgettable one. And not in a good way.

By booking in advance, you can take advantage of early-bird deals. Additionally, you'll be guaranteed a seat at your preferred time and date. Zurich is a popular spot for tourists and locals, so seats can sell out.

Keep Travel Essentials Handy

One of the most simple yet effective travel tips is to carry a daypack to have easy access to all your essentials in one place.

Keep a physical printout of booking confirmations in case of misunderstandings or low phone battery. Train conductors will also want to inspect your ticket, so having them handy will keep things smooth.

Other things to pack that will enhance your experience are: - Snacks - Reusable water bottle - Zurich travel guide - Camera - Headphones or other entertainment

Go Sightseeing

The route from Interlaken to Zurich is a scenic one. It encounters endless mountainous passes and remote settings, and you'll miss out on these attractions if you take public transport.

Book a private car with Daytrip and you can stop for sightseeing at places like Mount Rigi, Europe's oldest alpine road. Or educate yourself on the history and techniques of glassmaking at the Glasi Hergiswil Museum. It's a great way to enrich your travel day!

Prioritize Comfort

On a scenic venture to the foothills of the Swiss Alps, the last thing you want is an uncomfortable journey that will spoil the experience. Sitting in an aisle seat on an overcrowded bus in winter won't allow you to fully appreciate the setting.

By opting for a door-to-door car service, you'll have a private environment to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery. Noisy passengers or a lack of panoramic views won't be an issue.

How to Get From Interlaken to Zurich

Interlaken's pretty village and stunning surroundings attract over a million visitors annually. Many people travel from Interlaken to Zurich, so it's no surprise that much time, money, and effort has gone into connecting the areas.

As of 2024, you can choose between four modes of transportation. Choosing how to get from Interlaken to Zurich comes down to your preferences and needs!

Train from Interlaken to Zurich

Switzerland has one of the best rail systems worldwide, so it should be no surprise that the train is the most popular way people travel from Interlaken to Zurich. Locals and tourists use this line as it offers a quick, scenic, reliable, and reasonably priced service.

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is the only firm that operates between the two cities. From Interlaken Ost, you speed up to 124 mph to reach Zurich Hbn in around two hours. Seven direct daily trains will get you here in this timeframe, while the more frequent indirect ones will take up to three hours.

  • Cheapest train ticket: €24
  • Average train ticket price: €58
  • Average journey time: 2 hours, 6 minutes
  • Shortest journey time: 1 hour, 58 minutes
  • Journey distance: 57 miles
  • First train: 7 a.m.
  • Last train: 8 p.m.

Tours From Interlaken to Zurich

Tours are not the most common mode of transport from Interlaken to Zurich. However, they offer a convenient service if you're limited on time or plan on only spending the day in Zurich. There are plenty of companies that offer tours between the cities. Each operates differently, so defining your needs before you hand over your hard-earned cash is crucial.

Decide whether you want a group or a private tour. A group tour is already pre-arranged. There's no need to worry about choosing the pickup and drop-off times or what road you should take. On the other hand, a private tour requires a bit of planning, and the cost is higher. However, you don't have to share the vehicle with anyone except your friends or family.

Daytrip From Interlaken to Zurich

There's only one way to experience a once-in-a-lifetime Swiss road trip. In style and comfort! At Daytrip, we have driven up and down this stunning piece of the world countless times. Each time is just as beautiful and thrilling as the last. Since we know how incredible it is to travel from Interlaken to Zurich, we want to ensure you fully immerse yourself in the experience. Fortunately, style and comfort are our priorities!

Our professional driver will pick you up wherever you please and handle your luggage so you don't have to lift a finger. From there, they'll whisk you away at a safe speed in a spotless, comfortable, and smoke-free car.

During the drive, you can ask your English-speaking driver for their insights on Swiss history and culture or recommendations for Zurich's best local eats and hidden gems. And to further set a private car apart from public transport, Daytrip makes it easy to stop for sightseeing along the way. Why would you want to miss the postcard city of Lucerne, home to squares, churches, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or the panoramic views from atop Mount Rigi?

Carpooling From Interlaken to Zurich

Carpooling is a top choice if you're traveling in Europe on a budget. It's also an eco-friendly option, perfect for traveling sustainably. The price varies, as drivers can set rates however they please. However, you can expect to pay between €10 and €30 each way with the primary provider, BlaBlaCar.

Carpooling can be a cost-effective option. But there are vital factors to consider. One of the main downsides is that you have to share a car with strangers. Additionally, it can be challenging to secure a seat as they are often reserved well in advance during peak tourist seasons.

Another disadvantage is that it has no fixed timetables so it's essential to plan. You won't get door-to-door service - many carpools depart early in the morning from various locations around town. And, of course, you're sharing a car with an individual, so they make the rules. Don't expect white glove service, sightseeing stops, or any of the other benefits of riding with a private driver.

Things to Do When You Get to Zurich

Despite the considerable number of places to visit in Switzerland, Zurich is the most popular. In 2023, the city opened its gates to over 527,000 overnight stays. Once you see all the things to do when you get to Zurich, it's easy to see why so many people travel from Interlaken to Zurich!

Visit Lake Zurich

You can't say you visited Florida without visiting one of its white sandy beaches. And you can't say you visited Zurich without spending at least a day in front of the glimmering waters at Lake Zurich.

Lake Zurich is everything fabulous about Switzerland. Nature combines with the charming city, and friendly locals meet for outdoor activities on the water. You can plunge into an action-packed day of jet boating, upwind sailing, or kayaking. If you prefer to de-stress on your Swiss vacation, you can sit in the park and read a book or share a delicious picnic with friends or family with a view.

Spend Time in Kunsthaus Zurich

Zurich may not be the political capital of Switzerland, but it's certainly the cultural headquarters. Countless museums are scattered throughout the region, and Kunsthaus Zurich is the pick of the lot.

Art enthusiasts may get lost in these extensive buildings for hours. If you're not one, you will be after a few minutes with Switzerland's best collection of artifacts. The gallery showcases everything from historical to contemporary works. Its earliest exhibitions date back to the Middle Ages, from 1300 to 1500. You can keep returning to the museum's events during its year-long program.

Take a Day Trip to Uetliberg Mountain

Uetliberg Mountain is only 3.7 miles from downtown Zurich, yet it feels worlds apart. Cobblestone walkways and the fast-paced Financial District are swapped for wooded trails and a glacial natural environment. From its 2580-foot peak, you have a birds-eye view of Zurich and the surrounding landscape.

From Albisgüetli station (tram line 13), a leisurely stroll will get you to the top in under 1.5 hours. However, the stunning views, the smell of spruce trees, the feeling of twigs snapping beneath your feet, the noise of birds chirping, and the taste of adventure make an hour-long trek feel like a 15-minute walk.

Explore Altstadt

Altstadt is a picturesque maze of cobbled streets, historic buildings, and charming squares. This is one of the oldest parts of the city still standing today, dating back to the 1800s. Start your exploration at Grossmünster, one of Zurich's most iconic landmarks, known for its twin towers offering dramatic city views. Then, stroll down Niederdorfstrasse, lined with boutique shops and galleries. After recharging at one of the cafes here, it's time to admire the medieval architecture of Fraumünster Church and its stunning stained glass windows. Finally, explore Lindenhof, a serene hilltop park with sweeping views of the Limmat River and the city skyline.

Spend the Day at Zoo Zurich

If you're traveling from Interlaken to Zurich as a family, Zoo Zurich should be your first stop. The lovingly cared-for wildlife, guided tours, and activities make it fun for all ages. The most sought-after spot on the journey through one of Europe's best zoos is the Masoala Rainforest. You'll discover 40 vertebrate species, including chameleons, geckos, tortoises, and Madagascar tomato frogs. Be sure to check the daily activities when you arrive. You can witness penguin parades or feeding sessions at specific times.

Get Off the Beaten Path at Rechberg Garden

Rechberg Garden is a slice of heaven, off the beaten path. However, it's hidden in plain sight between the busy areas of Kunsthaus and Zurich University. The area was built in the 1970s and features a sprawling garden bursting with color. Water features are between the plants and trees, and each step teases you with a glimpse of the beautiful Haus zum Rechberg. This paradise is excellent for relaxing during a long day of sightseeing or taking shelter from the sun's rays. There's no entry fee. And if you visit during the weekdays, you'll have most of the space alone.

Best Time to Visit Zurich

No matter what time you travel from Interlaken to Zurich, The City with a Thousand Faces promises to be a memorable experience. However, depending on your preferences, some periods are more attractive than others.

Since Zurich is a sustainable city with numerous parks and green spaces, summer is a popular choice. From June to August the average high temperature is a nice 69° Fahrenheit. This, combined with 15 hours of daily sunshine, allows you to relish attractions like the Flussbad Oberer Letten, a public outdoor swimming pool, and the Botanical Gardens, the perfect spot to unwind.

Summer is the peak travel period, but spring is arguably the best time to visit Zurich, and Europe in general. The shoulder-season months include April and May when the gray clouds begin to make way for clear blue skies.

The pleasant weather gives a sense of excitement to the streets, as it's the first time since October that locals could sit outdoors. In addition to the weather, there are also fewer tourists. The narrow lanes are uncrowded, and queues at museums, galleries, and restaurants are shorter. But the most compelling reason is that you can save some money as hotels, tours, and airlines offer exclusive deals to fill their occupancy rates.

Great communication with an actual person! They will take you ANYWHERE, No pre-set routes to choose from!

Last minute plan change and Daytrip was our last resort so I chatted with them and had an immediate response from a real person, best situation ever. Never used Daytrip before but the reviews were incredible so we took the chance and booked a driver at like 11-12pm and by 7am the next morning when we woke, they found us a driver and the driver had already texed us making contact! Very impressed and will definitely use them again. We went from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Tivat, Montenegro.

Private transfer from Zurich to Interlaken.

The services of Daytrip are outstanding. Booking the private transfer was easy, their website is great, and their follow-up with their emails prior to the trip was excellent. The driver Constantin, with a Tesla car waited for me at the Zurich airport, and since I had to wait for my wife’s later flight, he loaded up my luggage and came back for us. He was very professional, helpful and accommodating in every way. Our trip was very enjoyable, we had a lot of fun, and arrived in Interlaken on time. Daytrip is a well-run business, reliable, and very competitive. They are working on expanding in the United States, which is a great idea, given the scattered and sometimes questionable limo services. Paul S. Fairfax, Virginia

Travel could not have been made easier.

We landed in Zurich and were met by our driver Darko with a van large enough to take the four of us plus all the luggage. He drove us Lucerne for a one hour stop over. He then took us to our final destination of interlaken. All in less time and expense then taking any other type of transportation. Great just simply great
