After spending a few days in warm Andalusia, nothing is more refreshing than dipping yourself in the crisp waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

However, your journey begins long before you reach your destination, as there is more to see and explore on your drive from Seville to Carvoeiro. With Daytrip, you can easily tailor the trip to your needs and stop at any sightseeing stops. While still in Spain, take a break at the town of Huelva, then not far from the border stop to explore the medieval Castle of Castro Marim, experience the authentic Cacela Velha, or admire the blue-tiled interior of the Church of Sao Lourenco de Almancil.

About Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro, located in the Algarve region of Portugal, might seem like the typical Portuguese resort city at first glance. However, Carvoeiro has a unique charm you cannot find anywhere else. It is characterized by its white-washed houses adorned with pops of color and neutral-toned roofs. Some of these charming homes are perched along majestic limestone cliffs, overlooking golden sands that blend seamlessly with the ocean waves, creating a soothing lullaby for those lying down to soak in the radiant rays of the sun.

Doesn’t that sound like the perfect coastline holiday destination? Compared to the typical resorts, Carvoeiro stands true to its traditions, conserving its authenticity. Once you step your feet out of the vehicle, you will be whisked away by the local charm, characterized by its welcoming atmosphere, just like in any smaller village. It is the ideal destination for those looking to enjoy quality time with loved ones, leaving the vibrant nightlife scene, tall buildings, and fast food chains to other resorts.

However, Carvoeiro is not just for sunbathing, as there is plenty to explore both within the town and its surroundings. Be sure to check out our recommendations below to make the most of your visit. Meanwhile, it is worth pointing out that Carvoeiro is a paradise for those who feel right at home by the coast, as there are all kinds of activities for outdoorsy travelers—kayaking, paddleboarding, as well as hiking, cycling, and even playing golf.

Once a fishing village, Carvoeiro has slowly but steadily captured the hearts of those seeking a serene and culturally rich resort destination. From the ever-present ocean breeze ruffling through your hair and the soft, golden sand sticking to your feet to the most magical sunsets, Carvoeiro is a place worth discovering.

From Seville to Carvoeiro: travel tips

Before you sit down, buckle up, and relax in the comfortable Daytrip’s vehicle to travel from Seville to Carvoeiro, there are a couple of things that are good to know or be prepared for to enjoy your stay in Carvoeiro:

Pick up basic Portuguese

Although Carvoeiro is a resort town where most people at hotels and restaurants speak English, knowing a few phrases in Portuguese can put a smile on the locals’ faces. Here are some phrases that may come in handy:

  • Olá (Hello)
  • Obrigado or obrigada (Thank you)
  • Por favor (Please)
  • Adeus (Goodbye)
  • Desculpe (Sorry)
  • Quanto custa? (How much is it?)

Here’s a tip to polish your European Portuguese pronunciation: when the letter ‘S’ is at the end of a word or followed by a consonant (such as ‘C’ and ‘T’, as in the examples above), it sounds like ‘SH’ (as in ‘shell’). So, the word ‘adeus’ is pronounced as ‘adeush’.

Parking is not easy

While it is not the actual parking that is hard in Carvoeiro, you will find it difficult to find a free spot to park your car. As the city is quite compact, you can easily move around on foot and travel to the city by using any other mode of transportation (which you can learn more about in the next section).

The water is cooler than you think

It is a common misconception that the water in southern Portugal is very warm. In reality, even during the warmest months, temperatures typically do not exceed 72° F (22° C). However, this should not discourage you from jumping in. It's very refreshing after you've been sweating under the hot Portuguese sun!

How to get from Seville to Carvoeiro

Unfortunately, these two cities are not well-connected. Nevertheless, we have summarized the best possible alternatives for your Seville to Carvoeiro transfer, so you can choose the most convenient option for your trip to the sunny Algarve.

From Seville to Carvoeiro by bus

While there are direct buses from Seville to other cities in the Algarve region, reaching Carvoeiro from Seville is a bit tricky due to multiple transfers.

One option is to take an ALSA bus from Seville to Faro (price: from $25 (€23); travel time: around 3 hours). From Faro, you can catch a Vamus bus to Lagoa (price: $13 (€12); travel time: 1 hour and 10 minutes). Once you arrive in Lagoa, take another Vamus bus to Carvoeiro, with the bus stop at Vale Covo (price: $3 (€2.80); travel time: 15 minutes). In total, you will spend around $41 (€38) and approximately 4.5 hours traveling by bus, not including wait times between connections.

From Seville to Carvoeiro by rental car

As Seville and Carvoeiro are not well-connected, one of the most popular ways to reach the resort city is by renting a car. The driving distance from Seville to Carvoeiro is approximately 155 miles (250 km) and it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the coastal city. There are several car rental companies available in this area, so make sure you read the reviews and choose a reliable one.

Be aware that some of the motorways have tolls (for example, A-22), and parking in Carvoeiro isn’t the greatest. Plus, you’ll be paying for a car you’re not using when you’re soaking up the sun in Carvoeiro.

From Seville to Carvoeiro by private car service

If you do not feel like driving a car yourself and want to enjoy your trip to the fullest, a great way to travel from Seville to Carvoeiro is by private car service, such as Daytrip. You will be picked up from your accommodation in Seville, and take you on an unforgettable journey to Portugal’s sunny southern coast. Our drivers speak English, so you don’t have to worry about the language barrier—feel free to ask for any recommendations only locals know!

Another advantage of booking Daytrip’s private car service is that you can explore along the way. Before you leave Spain, stop at Huelva and explore its historic city center, then visit the medieval fortress of the Castle of Castro Marim. Escape the crowds at the fishing village of Cacela Velha and admire the typical Portuguese blue tiles at the Church of Sao Lourenco de Almancil. As you are not driving, take the advantage to visit Quinta da Tor to taste the authentic wine from the Algarve region.

Carvoeiro is not just about stunning beaches, there is so much more to discover. To help you make the most of your visit, we have listed our favorite things to do. We hope these recommendations become highlights of your stay, too!

Go on a boat tour to Benagil Cave

One of the main attractions near Carvoeiro, drawing many visitors to the area, is the iconic Benagil Cave. This sea cave features an opening in the roof, formed by the gradual collapse of limestone due to erosion. You can explore the cave in three ways: by boat, paddleboard, or kayak, with the latter two options being ideal for adventurous souls. Since you are already in Carvoeiro, look for tours departing from the city.

Explore the Algar Seco cliffs

Although slightly less popular, the Algar Seco cliffs and its wooden boardwalk are also a must-visit attraction in Carvoeiro. The walk is relatively short but highly rewarding, offering stunning views of the Algarve cliffs and the Algar Seco Caves. As you explore the area, you will discover a natural rock pool, perfect for a refreshing dip after a stroll under the warm sun.

Practice or learn how to play golf

Vacation is the perfect time to pick up a new skill, so why not take golf classes? Carvoeiro and its surrounding areas have become popular among golf enthusiasts, whether you're a beginner or a skilled player. Some of the most notable golf resorts nearby include Vale de Milho, Pestana Golf Resort, and Benamor Golf.

Go dolphin-watching

While Carvoeiro itself is not known for dolphins, other nearby parts of the Algarve coast offer a great opportunity to meet the marine life of the ocean, including dolphins and even whales. The main cities that offer dolphin-watching tours are Lagos, Albufeira, and Portimao.

When is the best time to visit Carvoeiro

As a resort destination known for its stunning beaches, Carvoeiro is best visited during the spring and summer months when the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for enjoying the refreshing ocean. However, keep in mind that these months also bring larger crowds.

Carvoeiro is also worth considering during the off-peak season (April and October). During these months, the coastal city enjoys a serene atmosphere while still maintaining pleasantly warm temperatures.

The coldest months are from January to March, so if you’re looking to take a dip in the water, early in the year might not be the ideal time to visit Carvoeiro.

Comfortable and Safe Rides in Mexico

Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.

Excellent service

We used the service twice while in Thailand. Extremely prompt and efficient customer service. Best rate being offered in Chiang Mai for the travels. Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.
