Agioi Saranta Cave Church

Find peace in this humble church hidden beneath a rock.

About

Cyprus is home to many notable churches, but Agioi Saranta Cave Church stands out. Carved into a rock on Fanos Hill, it remains relatively unknown, despite being situated in the touristy Protaras bay. There’s no signage for it, and the only access it is a dirt road. Amounting to essentially a rustic white-washed stone wall and blue wooden door baring the entrance to a small cave, the church has a primordial sense of peace about it. The unpretentious interior, features only a few icons and stools for visitors, and the only light comes from a small opening left at the cave mouth. Not much is known about the church's past, but that shouldn't detract from its simplicity and serenity - sometimes, less is more. Even visitors to the nearby Profitis Elias Church often overlook the Agioi Saranta Cave Church, making it an ideal spot for contemplation, meditation, or prayer away from the tourist crowds. The church is open all year round, and there’s no admission fee.
