Almagro

While archaeological evidence suggests that the Romans were once present in Almagro, it was the Germans who really left their mark on this Spanish town.

About

During the 16th and 17th centuries, a family of German bankers, the Fuggers, held concessions on nearby mines in return for loans to the Spanish government. This prominent family also held architectural influence over the town which can still be seen today. One example is the Plaza Mayor de Almagro, or town square, with distinctive galleries along two sides endowed with dark-green painted windows. Visitors are encouraged to take a relaxing walk along the square and browse the handmade local crafts on display, or stop for a meal at one of the many tapas bars or restaurants. The Corral de comedias de Almagro, or Courtyard theatre of Almagro, is also situated within the town square and annually hosts the International Classical Theatre Festival. Although this event only happens once a year, those interested in theatre can always visit the nearby National Theatre Museum all year-round.
