Amerongen Castle

This classic estate has preserved the private lives, and individual tastes of its many blue-blooded owners.

Om

Built in 1680 on the site of a medieval castle, Amerongen Castle is one of the country’s finest examples of the Dutch Classicist style. Over the centuries, the noble families, diplomats, and military officers each left a mark on the estate, culminating with its final resident: the German Emperor Wilhelm II who fled here following World War I. Today, the castle houses a museum where visitors will find opulently ornamented rooms dripping with gilt woodwork and vibrant paintings, a calm and cozy library, and exceptional examples of Dutch craftsmanship, such as the famous 17th-century cabinets made by Dutch cabinet maker Jan van Mekeren, not to mention one of the 3 noble music libraries in the country. In the sprawling garden, visitors can enjoy several centuries of grounds-keeping styles, with influences from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque eras shining through.
