Beaumaris Castle
The largest and most ambition fortification of its age, this UNESCO-listed castle was the pinnacle of medieval military architecture.
Om
Started at the end of the 13th century, Beaumaris Castle was the last of Edward I's 'iron ring' of castles in North Wales. Despite never being fully completed because of its exorbitant construction costs, the castleâs 'walls within walls' design and its perfect proportions made it one of the most advanced engineering feats of its time, and kept it a relevant military stronghold until the 17th century. Around 1660, a garrison was no longer needed in the region, so the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, the moat, double ring of walls, and open spaces provide a plenty of places for visitors to explore, with some of the castleâs rooms housing historical information to help visitors imagine what it was like several centuries ago.
