The Big Elk, also known as “Storelgen” in Norwegian, is the second-tallest sculpture of a moose in the world, after being beaten out by the Canadian “Mac the Moose” in 2019. Reaching a height of 10.3 meters, the Big Elk is located near the village of Atna in Stor-Elvdal, Hedmark. It was created by Norwegian artist Linda Bakke in collaboration with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to raise awareness about wildlife on the roads and promote driver safety. Stor-Elvdal is also home to Norway’s third-highest population of moose, making the statue a symbol of the municipality. The Big Elk serves as a testament to the natural beauty of Norway and how humans can coexist harmoniously with its wildlife.
