Carlstens Fastning

Once a prison for violent criminals, this island fortress is now a pleasant place to visit, complete with a comfy hotel.

About

Carlstens Fastning was built in the 17th century after the region was ceded to Sweden from Denmark-Norway. Since the harbor below the fort almost never freezes the town was an important trading place, and station for the Swedish Navy. The area remained contested for centuries, and Carlstens was retaken by Norway on multiple occasions before being converted into a prison in the 19th century. Today, visitors are free to explore the fort to learn about its fascinating past and enjoy views of the coast, but for a truly immersive experience you should join one of the 45-minute guided tours (English can be arranged in advance) to see the Walk of Sighs, Gallows Hill, Lasse-Maja's Kitchen and the Fortress Church. Please note: hours vary by season, so you should check in advance at carlsten.se/en/
