Castello Piccolomini

The fertile valley spread out below this medieval castle was actually the third largest lake in Italy, which is remembered in the castle museum.

Om

Built in 1392, and embellished by its namesake Antonio Piccolomini in 1463, this angular castle once overlooked Italy’s largest lake. Since the Roman’s the area’s controlling power sought to drain the lake, finally succeeding towards the end of the 19th century. The resulting plain is one of the the most fertile in Italy, giving a verdant, though not quite ancient, vista from the castle. Inside the Marsica Museum, overlooking its portico courtyard, is dedicated to the areas history. The museum covers several themes the lost lake, to sacred art and Iron Age weaponry. Please note: the castle is closed on Mondays.
