Castletown House

The first and largest manor of its kind in Ireland, this elegant estate immerses visitors in the beauty of days gone by.

About

Castletown House was built in 1722 for William Connolly, speaker of the Irish House of Commons, and the wealthiest non-noble in Ireland. The earliest and largest Palladian-style manor in the country, the interior was designed by William Chambers - one of the founders of the Royal Academy. Though the breakup of the estate in the 1960s reduced the vast walled gardens, the manor itself remains a posterchild for Georgian architecture in Ireland. Visitors can join a guided tour, or, from April to the end of October, opt for a self-guided option, to explore the manor’s elegantly decorated interior and admiring the detailed stucco, Murano glass chandeliers, countless objects d’art. Walking the recently-restored 18th century parklands, you’ll pass rivers, fields, woodlands, and even a classical temple! Please note that the castle is currently closed for the unforeseen future; however, the park is still publicly accessible. For more information, please visit www.castletown.ie
