Caves of Diros

This gorgeous cave system is accessed via a pleasant boat ride.

About

Starting around 4000 BC, these extraordinary caves were used as shelter by ancient man, until an earthquake around 4 BC sealed the cave entrance, trapping people inside. Rediscovered in 1895, the system has been systematically explored since 1949. The system is estimated to be 14 kilometers long, but ongoing exploration of the countless underwater passageways might change that. A guided tour (in Greek) brings visitors into the cave by boat, gliding through passages adorned with delicate stalactites and stalagmites. The final 300 meters is taken on foot through winding passages past more cave ornaments. Please note: the caves are open from 8:30AM to 3:30pm.
