Chateaubriant Castle

Founded as a defensive keep in the 11th century, during the Renaissance, the estate was rebuilt to be a noble home. According to legend, Jean de Laval, lord of the chateau, had his wife Françoise de Foix killed on October 16th, 1537. Since then, she has haunted the estate, appearing with a procession of ghostly knights and monks at midnight on the anniversary of her death. Today, visitors can enjoy the chateau’s blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture from its peaceful grounds, or explore its furnished rooms, either on their own or with a guided tour. Particularly striking is the Golden Room, with its ornate gilded mouldings, which is credited to Françoise de Foix.
