Chavin de Huantar

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the oldest and most striking pre-Colombian sites in the country.

About

Development of Chavin de Huantar began around 1200 BC, more than 2000 years before the Incas built their empire in the Andes of Peru. A place of worship to their zoomorphic Gods, the Chavin civilization would gather for ritualistic ceremonies and events, engaging in hallucinogenic drug-use to transform into animals themselves. There’s no wonder thousands of years later artist Pablo Picasso’s interest was piqued by their cult-like activities and the abstract depictions engraved in the stonework! Explore the underground maze, said to be designed to confuse the intoxicated Chavin people who walked it, and admire the psychedelic artwork carved into the walls for an insight into this ancient culture. The site is open from Tuesday-Sunday 09:00-16:00
