Cochem Castle

Destroyed by Louis XIV, this castle came even back more glorious than before.

Om

Constructed in the early 12th century, German king Konrad III moved in in 1150 and declared it an Imperial castle. For centuries it stood unmolested until 1688, when Louis XIV's troops overran and destroyed it in the course of the Nine Years' War. The castle lay in ruins until it was purchased by a Berlin businessman in 1868 and reconstructed in the Gothic Revival style and used as a family summer residence. Today it strikes an imposing silhouette on the hilltop above Cochem. A tour walks guests through the richly decorated interior, where you can photograph the decor and the spectacular views of the Moselle valley through the windows.
