Finstermuenz

This rugged gorge needed to be fortified in the Middle Ages because of the bandits that prowled the area.

Om

First mentioned in the 12th century, Altfinstermuenz was a dreaded part of the trade route that still utilized the old Roman Via Claudia Augusta because of frequent attacks by bandits. In the 15th century, Archduke Sigismund of Austria built the fortifications and bridge, which would later defend against the Swiss and French. Today, visitors can pass through the 15th century bridge tower via a wooden bridge, which is covered on the Austrian side and open on the Swiss side. There’s also a 5-story defensive tower and 17th century church within the medieval battlements for visitors to explore.
