Fort Bard

This imposing fortress was so effective, it took Napoleon 2 weeks to take the ‘villain castle’, even though he outnumbered the defenders 100 to 1.

Om

The rocky outcrop overlooking to town of bard has hosted a military garrison since the 6th century. Over the centuries, the fortification was expanded, and by the 18th century was nearly impregnable. In May 1800, the castle’s garrison of 400 was able to withstand a two week siege by 40,000 French troops. After finally taking the fortress, Napoleon had it razed to avoid further problems. In 1830, the fort was reconstructed and used as a prison and weapons depot. It was decommissioned in 1975 and sat unused until being purchased by the Aosta Valley regional authority in 1990. Following renovations, the fortress was completely restored and opened to the public in 2006. Along with great views, visitors can explore the grounds, take a guided tour to learn about every nook and cranny, or learn about the history and culture of the region at the Museum of the Alps.
