Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay

Feeding continents and armies, this historic factory is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its influential role in bringing packaged food to the world.

About

The Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay was founded in 1865, and by the end of its 120-year-run, had fed allied soldiers in the trenches, and sent meat products to 5 continents. This factory was the first representation of the industrial revolution in the area, and the heavy machinery wouldn't look out of place in Victorian Manchester - this historic architecture and early industrial machinery is one of the reasons Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay was named a part of the Historical Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2015. But the Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay wasn't just a factory - its associated facilities covered 274 hectares, including farmland for cattle, and a community of 232 homes which created the town of “Barrio Anglo”. While the factory has long been shuttered, its legacy lives on - this is the birthplace of the Fray Bentos meat pies and corned beef that have been popular in the UK since the early 20th century.
