In the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park, whimsical rock formations lie deep within one of Mexico’s largest cave systems formed 50-60 million years ago.
Grutas de García and its array of breathtaking stalagmites and stalactites remained hidden for thousands of years until 1843, when its beauty was uncovered by some wandering brothers. After notifying the priest of a nearby church, the mountain in which the caves were found took the name of Sierra del Fraile, or “Mountain of the Friar”. Upon entering the caves, two different paths emerge, each with their own array of chambers that have taken on fanciful names. “El salón de la luz”, or “The Light Chamber” is one of the most spectacular chambers, with light from the outside of the cave filtering through. A formation known as “The Eighth Wonder” exhibits a stalagmite and stalactite connected to form an impressive column. Gaze in awe at the 40 meter high balcony in “The Air Chamber” and take some snaps of “EL mirador de la mano”, a stalagmite that resembles a human hand.
