Haifoss

Once thought to be the highest waterfall in Europe, Iceland’s fourth highest cascade is joined by an equally beautiful neighbor.

About

At 122 meters tall, Haifoss was believed to be the tallest waterfall in Europe when it was discovered in the early 20th century. Named by Dr. Helgi Pjetursson, the first Icelander to obtain a Ph.D. in geology, the ‘high waterfall’ may have been usurped, but the name stuck. From the lush countryside, the Haifoss plunges over a sheer cliff, its white waters contrasting against black stone. But what makes Hiafoss even more beautiful when viewed from across the gorge is its dear neighbor waterfall, Granni, just a few meters away. Please note: the last stretch of road leading to Haifoss is extremely bumpy.
