Greece
This monastery's Middle Byzantine architecture is so exceptional, it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the early 10th century, hermits Venerable and St. Luke (Hosios and Loukas in Greek) founded the monastery of Hosios Loukas on the scenic slopes of Mount Helicon, and to this day, relics from both hermits' relics are kept at the site. While being well-known for its architecture and exteriors, the interior, with its decorations is equally stunning. The monastery also has a burial crypt, which like the rest of the monastery, features amazing decorations on its walls - various frescoes depicting stories from the Bible, apostles, martyrs, holy men and others. It's believed most of the frescoes were painted in a single year - 1048. Because of all of these attributes, the monastery has earned a label of one of the most impressive monuments in the Mediterranean Sea.
