Jvari Monastery

A sixth century Georgian Orthodox monastery and UNESCO World Heritage Site stands proudly atop Jvari Mount as a remarkable example of early Medieval church architecture.

About

Considered one of the most sacred places in all of Caucasus, Jvari Monastery has survived almost unchanged throughout the centuries and appears to nearly hang over the precipice of a cliff. Perched on a rocky mountain top overlooking the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, Jvari monastery offers breathtaking views of Mtskheta, the former capital of the Kingdom of Iberia. Legend has it that in the early fourth century, Saint Nino erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple, which attracted pilgrims from all over the Caucasus. A small church, known as the “Small Church of Jvari”, was built adjacent to the main church, commemorating this sacred event. While Jvari Monastery has faced significant deterioration over the years due to water damage, conflicts, and insufficient upkeep, it remains an important pilgrimage site and symbol of faith in Georgia. The Great Church, still used for major celebrations, attracts visitors from near and far. Climbing halfway up the monastery, visitors may encounter a spring with holy water, believed to possess curative and miraculous properties.
