Kasbah Amridil

Featured in films and even the 50 dirham note, this well-preserved kasbah is a living museum that offers a fascinating look into traditional life.

Om

Built in the 17th century, little has changed at Kasbah Amridil since it was first built. The Nassiri family, the original founders, still own and maintain the kasbah. Walking through the narrow streets, visitors can see the ancient wells, olive-oil press, and bread ovens that were integral to life in the kasbah. The buildings have also been restored for visitors, and a museum with ancient Moroccan artifacts gives a looks at other aspects of local culture. If the kasbah’s silhouette looks familiar, you might recognize it from Lawrence of Arabia, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, or maybe just the back of the old 50 dirham note (the new ones don’t have it). Literally next door is a more recent riad, a style imported from Marrakesh, that has a garden and more luxurious air to it.
