Linlithgow Palace

Learn about the lives of Scottish royalty in the partially-ruined birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Outlander filming location.

Om

Originally a 12th century royal manor, Linlithgow Palace was the favoured residence of the Scottish crown starting with King James I. King James III, IV, V, and VI continuing construction on the castle during their reigns. In 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie briefly visited the palace on his way south - an occasion marked by making the palace fountain flow with wine. A few months later, the Duke of Cumberland and his troops stayed in the palace as they chased Bonnie Prince Charlie back north, leaving the palace ablaze on their departure. Today, the castle still stands how the English left it - a roofless, partial-ruin. Walking the halls, visitors can admire elegant architecture, such as the oriel windows of the king’s and queen’s bedchambers, while learning about the private lives of Scottish royalty through informative signs. Visitors can also scale Queen Margaret’s Bower for stupendous views over the peel and loch.
