Mad Synagogue

Built in 1795, Mád Synagogue is one of the few remaining examples of Hungarian synagogue architecture. Situated between a Catholic church and a Reformed church, the Baroque structure’s very position is a testament to the communities’ peaceful coexistence. Overlooking the Tokaj region’s famous vineyards, the Jewish community here produced their own kosher wine. During World War II, the Jewish community was deported to concentration camps, and few of the survivors returned, leaving the temple abandoned. In 2004, it was restored and reopened in all its Baroque splendor. The walls and ceilings are covered with colorful geometric designs, and the original Torah ark is a gilded beauty. Amongst the striking ornamentation, plaques commemorate those who perished in the war, making this unique architectural monument a Holocaust memorial as well.
