Monastery of Saint Maron

This remarkable ancient cavern was initially created as a refuge by the Romans, carved into solid rock on the side of a cliff.

About

Comprising three levels with rock stairways, altars, and small cells, The Monastery of Saint Maron is believed to have been the dwelling place of Saint Maron and his early followers during the fourth century CE when the Maronite Church was founded. The cave is a blend of military architecture from the Medieval era and serves as both a tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors of various faiths. Carved into the towering rock face, the cave features an altar, staircases, and cells hewn directly from the stone. Romans, who inhabited the site while working on irrigation projects in the surrounding area, may have been its earliest occupants. Perched 90 meters above the Orontes River in northern Lebanon, this is a landmark begging to be seen with your own eyes.
