Phanom Rung

Phanom Rung was built between the 10th and 13th centuries as a shrine dedicated to Shiva, atop an extinct volcano symbolizing the god’s residence. Today, the temple complex is one of the most extensive examples of Khmer architecture in the country. Before even reaching the main temple, visitors can see the pavilion where the king would prepare for ceremonies. A Naga bridge and steep stairs lead to the inner sanctum. Be sure to look for the pediments and lintels decorated with depictions of Shiva and Vishnu, and scenes from the epic Ramayana. The centerpiece of the temple is the 23 meter high pink sandstone tower, which was built to represents Mount Meru, the Hindu center of the universe. Surrounding this are two smaller and older brick towers from the 10th and 11th - Phanom Rung’s oldest structures. On April 13th, the sun shines through all of the temple’s portals, and a huge celebration is held.
