Paraguay
While it's past is turbulent and bloody, today this quiet town has something much sweeter to offer.
Because many of the official documents containing written history of Piribebuy were destroyed during the Paraguayan War, some details of the town at the time of colonization are lost to history. The Pedro Pablo Caballero Historical Museum offers a unique look into the tragedy of war and heroic efforts by citizens of the country. Presently, the unique landscape of Piribebuy is rich with resources that contribute to its economic success in the region. Piribebuy is the main producer of caña, a traditional drink made from sugar cane. It is regarded as the best city to sample this sweet liquor. Don’t miss the Church of Dulce Nombre de Jesus which houses a small museum containing memorabilia from the Paraguayan and Chaco Wars. Its hand-carved altarpiece is one example of beautiful Franciscan works in the country.
