About

Piva Lake, known locally as Pivisko Jezero, is a spectacular man-made lake in the Municipality of Pluzine in northwestern Montenegro near the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park. It was built in 1975 to generate hydrologic power after the Piva River was dammed. Piva Lake’s artificial reservoirs boast the highest elevation in the world and have beautiful views of the region. The freshwater lake is known to be more than 200 meters deep in some places and over 45 kilometers long. When visiting the Piva Lake near Pluzine, travelers should expect to be immersed in nature. The area is beautiful, with dense stands of trees, spectacular canyons formed by the Piva, Tara, Susica, and Komarnica rivers, and limestone plateaus. Visitors can explore the lake's perimeter, take pictures, enjoy a boat or rafting trip on its crystal clear turquoise waters, or spend a little time fishing its depths for chub and trout.
