Known for its silver, and later uranium mines, Příbram’s long history of mining is preserved in this massive open-air museum.
Since the 19th century, the Příbram Silver Mining Museum has been keeping the city’s rich mining history alive. Known for its silver mines in the Middle Ages, in the 1950s uranium mining began in the city, which the Communist regime manned with forced labour camps. Today, the extensive open-air museum offers visitors several tour options, such as a ride on the mine train, a look into the 1600 meter-deep Prokop mine, or a walk through the historic Anna mine shafts. At the Drkolnov mine, visitors descend underground via a 50 meter long slide, and can ride on the water wheel. At the mine’s museum, visitors will find historic mining machines, an extensive collection of minerals, and an exhibition on miner’s daily lives.
